Buffalo Elite Teams
Buffs Bested by MCLA's #1 Team
By David Leach; Assistant Coach, CU Lacrosse

Ann Arbor, MI (March 14, 2009) - Against the #1 ranked team in the country, Michigan, the Buffs held strong for the first 15-minute frame before giving up a big 2nd quarter on route to an eventual 13-4 loss.

It took just 14 seconds for Michigan to take the lead. Off a clean face-off win by David Reinhard (East Lansing/ East Lansing, MI) and the subsequent fast-break, a quick pass to Riley Kearns (Brother Rice/ Bloomfield Hills, MI) and another quick one across the crease found Trevor Yealy (Upper St. Clair/ Pittsburgh, PA) for his first of an eventual five goals on the night.

Two minutes later the Wolverines would get a two-goal lead after Riley Kearns found the back of the net on a Buffalo defensive mix-up.

Michael Emerson (Park City/ Park City, UT) would answer back for the Buffs three minutes later. A pumped-up CU squad was officially back in the game.

A Michigan man-up goal, off a penalty to Ryan Burt (East/ Denver, CO), made it a 2-goal game again. With the reigning MCLA champs on the board now three times, and the Buffs struggling to keep up, Darren Hulick (Heritage/ Littleton, CO) scored his 9th of the season to pull CU back within one.

“Darren has complimented our attack nicely. He’s taking the shots that he needs to take, and finding the back of the net”, said head coach John Galvin.

Down 3-2 at the end of the 1st, it was evident that the Buffs had come to play.

An abysmal 2nd quarter for the Buffs would find them in a hole. After taking only two shots to Michigan’s 24, the team from Boulder couldn’t possibly match the six goals that slipped by CU goalie Kevin Moriarty (Seton Hall Prep/ Chatham, NJ).

With a halftime score of 9-2 the Buffs had an uphill-battle ahead of them.

At the start of the 3rd quarter the Michigan Wolverines picked up exactly where they left off. Scoring two more goals and consuming nearly 10 minutes before CU could respond, Michigan had dominated every facet of the game. AJ Blackburn (Hun School/ Princeton, NJ) found the twine for a CU-goal that was just too little too late. After another 14 shots by Michigan and three goals in total, the quarter ended with a 9-goal-lead at 12-3.

The final frame of such a disappointing game for the Buffs, was highlighted by Tyler Snyder’s (Arapahoe/ Centennial, CO) 8th goal of the season.

“Tyler plays like some of the best midfielders in the country. The reason for that, he studies the game of some of the best midfielders in the country, plain and simple,” explained assistant coach Tate Price. “He has such a passion for this game.”

Another goal by Michigan would equalize the efforts in the 4th and close out the game 13-4 for the reigning MCLA champs.

The Buffs’ next match-up will be tomorrow, Sunday March 15th at Michigan State. MSU’s 1st game of the season will be against a hungry CU squad.
