At 2-0, CU Remains Team to Beat
By: Cortney Kesselman, Public Relations, CU Lacrosse

Boulder, CO (March 6, 2009) - The University of Colorado Men’s Lacrosse Team hosted the University of Montana tonight at Kittredge field in the team’s second game of the season.  While both teams played a hard-fought game, it was the Buffs that brought home another victory for CU.

After Marty Taffet (Cherry Creek/Englewood, CO) won the opening face-off for CU, the Buffs’ offense continued to keep the pressure on.  Within the first minute and a half of game play, Robert Ogez (Niwot HS/Longmont, CO) scored the first goal for CU.  Montana managed to knock one back before allowing the Buffs to score three more times by the end of the first quarter, making the score 4-1.

If the Grizzlies wanted to stay in the game, they would have to regroup during the second quarter.  The challengers began with a renewed intensity, as they really started to set up their offense and only thirty seconds in, Montana found the back of the twine.  The Buffs gave up two more goals to the Grizzlies within a minute, tying the score up at 4-4.  However, it wasn’t long before CU’s offense got back in the zone with a nicely placed shot by Captain Mike Emerson (Park City/Park City, UT) assisted by AJ Blackburn (Hun School/Princeton, NJ), which gave the Buffaloes their lead back.  The score read 5-4 at the end of the first half giving CU the lead, but they definitely needed to step up their game if they wanted to keep it.

As expected, Colorado turned up the heat during the second half.  The attack took shots while the defense kept position and before long, Josh Albrecht (Lafayette/St. Louis, MO) earned CU a two-point lead.  Moments later that lead would increase, thanks to Robert Ogez and his cut through the middle of the Montana defense.  One of the game’s highlights came when Mike Britt (Highlands Ranch/Lone Tree, CO) made an amazing breakaway play down the field, assisting Darren Hulick (Heritage/Littleton, CO) and giving Colorado its 8th game point.  The Buffs continued to take advantage of shot opportunities, scoring three more by the end of the third quarter, including another by AJ Blackburn with 30 seconds left, and by Tyler Snyder (Arapahoe/Littleton, CO) with four seconds left.

The Buffaloes did a good job of maintaining their control during the final quarter of the game, allowing two more in the net from Montana, but also netting two more shots courtesy of Colin Rosenblum (Hun School/Princeton, NJ) and Joel Packer (Stevenson/Monterey, CA).  The final score read 13-6.

CU definitely allowed the Grizzlies to take a few too many shots that team Captain and goalie Kevin Moriarty (Seton Hall Prep/Chatham, NJ) kept out of the net.  The Buffs played an aggressive game and at times appeared very physically imposing on the Grizzlies. They gave up quite a few sloppy penalties, which they will have to work on during the rest of the season.

Colorado’s next game is this Sunday, March 8, when they host Texas A&M at 12pm on Kittredge Field.
