Versus Nebraska, a Well-Deserved Win for CU By: Cortney Kesselman, Public Relations, CU Lacrosse
April 24, 2009 (Boulder, CO) The University of Colorado Men’s Lacrosse Team hosted The University of Nebraska tonight at Franklin Field in a game that ended quite well for the home team. The Buffs brought their A game to the field, with a final score of 15-6 to show for it.
From the start, Colorado played the game in front of Nebraska’s goal. After earning their first point courtesy of Joel Packer (Stevenson School/ Monterey, CA), the Buffs continued to score at a consistent pace. By the end of the first quarter, CU led 6-1 after a goal from Colin Rosenblum (Hun School/ Princeton Junction, NJ) found the back of the twine just as the buzzer signaled the quarter’s end.
Even with a five-point lead, Colorado showed no sign of letting up during the second quarter. The home team took their time setting up their offense, taking advantage of shot opportunities and picking up grounders whenever possible. Nick Kupcewicz (Harrison/ Kennesaw, GA) provided the second quarter highlight with a shot that bounced off the ground and right into the net. The Buffs let the Huskers score only once and by the end of the half, their five-point lead widened to eight for a score of 10-2.
Nebraska definitely made Colorado work a little hard during the second half, as they played with a heightened intensity. However, the Buffs clearly out-maneuvered the visiting team. A strong defense and great saves from goalies Will Brown (Gulliver Prep/ Miami, FL) and Peter Reilly (King & Low-Heywood Thomas/ Darien, CT) made scoring a struggle for the Huskers. CU played an aggressive game and in the end, their offensive strategy proved too much for Nebraska to keep up with, allowing the Buffs to end the game with a final score of 15-6.
Kyle Wakefield (Canandaigua Academy/ Canandaigua, NY) who scored twice for Colorado, earning his first goals of the season, comments: “While it appeared sloppy at times we kept our heads in the game and the intensity up. It was a win for the entire team, with everyone involved. We did it together.”
Next up for the Buffs is a match up against the team’s long-standing rival and conference competitors the Colorado State University Rams. The two teams will play tomorrow at 5:30pm on Folsom Field.
Though Nebraska offered Colorado a sweet victory, the team knows they need to stay focused for their big game. Says Wakefield: “Tomorrow we’re going to have to cut down on turnovers but we’ve been preparing the entire season for this game.”
