Buffs Stampede Through Athens By: David Leach; Assistant Coach, CU Lacrosse
Athens, GA (March 25, 2009) - With three losses fresh on their minds, the CU Buffs traveled to Georgia for a must-win. After opening up a 4-0 lead, the Buffs never looked back as they cruised to a 13-5 victory over the Bulldogs of the University of Georgia.
Colorado played relentless, maintaining their composure throughout, pressuring the Dawgs defense and clearing the ball up-field in near perfect fashion.
Freshman midfielder Nick Kupcewicz (Harrison/ Kennesaw, GA) opened the scoring early for the Buffs with his 4th of the season. AJ Blackburn (Hun School, Princeton, NJ) followed up with his 1st of an eventual hat-trick and less than a minute later added his initial of three assists on the day with a nice look to senior Joel Packer (Stevenson/ Monterey, CA).
In the final three minutes of the opening stanza, Georgia found their inspiration. A goal by Chris Wilson (Lovett/ Atlanta, GA) put the score at 4-1 and reminded the Buffs that they were playing the SELC (South Eastern Lacrosse Conference) back-to-back champions.
In the second quarter, Colorado’s defense stepped it up. Holding the Dawgs to just seven shots, the boys in gold supported senior goaltender Kevin Moriarty (Seton Prep/ Chatham, NJ), as he held Georgia scoreless. Meanwhile Joel Packer collected his second and third tallies of the game putting his Buffs up 6-1 at halftime.
In the third, despite an increase in the UGA momentum, the Buffs would prove to be formidable foe on this rainy day. Kupcewicz found his second before the Bulldogs could respond with goals from Patrick Battey (Westminster/ Atlanta, GA) and Shaun McGahan (West Springfield/ Springfield, VA), who had three goals on the day. With a 4-goal lead, and the scoring situated at 7-3 the Buffs continued to pressure and at the end of the third, the score stood at 10-3 in favor of Colorado. The fourth quarter saw Colorado controlling much of the play. 15 seconds in, Joel Packer found his 4th of the game, 7th on the season, while Steven Keyes (Seaholm/ Birmingham, MI) and Josh Albrecht (Lafayette/ Chesterfield, MO) helped to establish a ten-goal lead. At 13-3, with just over nine minutes left to play, the Buffs had seemingly put the game out of reach for the opposition. Another two late goals from the Dawgs, couldn’t stop the inevitable; a convincing CU victory by a score of 13-5. One down, two to go for the Buffs on their 2009 Spring Break.
