Buffs Go Undefeated in State of Utah
By: Cortney Kesselman, Public Relations, CU Lacrosse

Salt Lake City, UT (April 5, 2009) - The University of Colorado Men’s Lacrosse Team played the University of Utah today in the last of their road-games this season.  Their match up against Utah, scheduled as the third game in as many days, challenged the team to stay focused enough to make it a 3-for-3 weekend.

Despite a few sloppy moments, CU managed to finish their trip west with a win, defeating the Utah Utes, 10-8, and taking their place atop the RMLC (Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference) standings.

The first quarter began a little slowly for the Buffs, allowing Utah to take the first goal.  However, Marty Taffet (Cherry Creek/Englewood, CO) quickly got CU in the game as he made a fast break down the field and netted the team’s first goal.  Despite their slow start, Colorado earned 3 more goals by the end of the quarter, 1 from Joel Packer (The Stevenson School/Monterrey, CA) and 2 from A.J. Blackburn (The Hun School/ Princeton, NJ).

Again the second quarter began a little slowly for the Buffs who led at 4-3.  A strong defensive setup from Alex Mical (Menlo School/Menlo Park, CA), Ryan Burt (Denver East/ Denver, CO), and Michael Geocaris (New Trier Township/ Wilmette, IL) kept shots on goal to a minimum.  By halftime, Mike Emerson (Park City/Park City, UT), Darren Hulick (Heritage/Littleton, CO), and A.J. Blackburn had each tallied one for CU, bringing the score to 7-4.

Aaron Gray (The Woodlands/The Woodlands, TX) gave the Buffs a strong start during the second half, with an unassisted goal only 13 seconds into the 3rd quarter. However, during the rest of the second half, Colorado seemed to have trouble staying out of the penalty box. With ten total, six in the second half alone, the Buffs found it difficult to find a possession. Not given the chance to find their rhytem, poorly placed shots made scoring difficult.

Despite a couple sloppy moments, the Buffs played a good game, leading throughout and finishing ahead at 10-8.  Highlights include 4 goals from A.J. Blackburn, and 2 from Joel Packer.

At 3-0 versus conference opponents, the Buffs aim to hold onto the spot to secure the #1 Seed going into the RMLC Conference Playoffs, hosted in Boulder, CO by the team itself. "With the playoffs on our fields, we'd love nothing more than to take the #1 seed going in," commented Assistant Coach Dave Leach, "there's still a lot of work to do, but proving yourself to your conference rivals is the first step."

Colorado plays again on Thursday, April 9 when they host Lindenwood University at 7pm on Kittredge Field in Boulder, CO.
