Versus Wyoming, Buffs Take Care of Business By: Scott Cunningham; CU Lacrosse Public Relations
Boulder, CO (April 28, 2009) - The Colorado Buffaloes have averaged just under ten goals per game in 2009. On Tuesday night, they more than doubled that mark.
In what could have been a potential trap game, there was no sign of a hangover for CU after their victory over Colorado State on Saturday. The Buffs (12-5, 5-0 conf.) trotted onto Kittredge Field for the regular season finale in top form and took care of business, beating the struggling Wyoming Cowboys (0-8, 0-5 conf.) by a score of 19-0. Aaron Gray (The Woodlands/ Woodlands, TX) took the opening faceoff and immediately sprinted down field, taking a hard shot on net less than 5 seconds into the game. This would be a sure sign of things to come, as the Buffs would pour shot after shot on the Cowboy defense for the duration of the evening. AJ Blackburn (Hun School/ Princeton, NJ) opened the scoring for Colorado with his 30th goal of the season 70 seconds into the game, followed by seven more Buff scores before the period was up.
CU held possession the entire first quarter, and nearly matched that performance in the second quarter. After scores by Tyler Brown(Foothill/ Tustin, CA), Nico Enea(De La Salle/ Danville, CA), and Brian Lemery(Ramapo/ Franklin Lakes, NJ), Wyoming finally saw it’s first offensive possession at the 7:27 mark; one that ended just seconds later. The Buffs tacked on three more before half time to make the score 13-0 at the halftime-break.
The Buffs added six more in the final two quarters, with Enea and Lemery finishing off hat tricks, and Lemery adding another late to make it four on the night for him. Colorado, with several players benched to rest, also gave many of their starters a rest in the second half. Allowing less experienced players to get some well-earned playing time in the team’s final preparations before facing Utah in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference Tournament.
As for the University of Wyoming, it was an unfortunate end to a tough season that was their first as a Division I MCLA team. The Cowboys brought only 13 players from Laramie to Boulder, a number that was made even smaller when Andrew Edstrom left the game in the second quarter with a wrist injury.
Notes: Colorado was nearly undefeated at the faceoff X going 19-4; Wyoming did not complete a pass in the offensive zone for 35:08 of official game-time; the Colorado defense allowed zero shots on goal for the entire game.
RMLC Playoffs Set to Begin Thursday
The University of Colorado hosts this year’s conference post season Tournament. Action begins with the Division II tournament starting at 4:30 PM on Kittredge Field. The Division I tournament begins Friday, May 1st at 4 PM on Franklin Field. The Buffs Face the Utah Utes at 7pm on Friday.
