Buffaloes Can’t Keep Up With Colorado College
By Scott Cunningham; Public Relations, CU Lacrosse
Boulder, CO (Feb. 7, 2009) As the University of
Colorado trotted onto Washburn Field in Colorado Springs to begin
warm-ups, they were treated to unseasonably warm 50-degree temperatures
and a beautiful view of Pikes Peak. Unfortunately for the Buffs, that’s
where the positives ended.
The NCAA Division III Colorado College Tigers played dominating defense and executed scoring opportunities as they overpowered the mistake-riddled Buffaloes. CC scored early and often,
netting the first four goals, and cruised to a 14-4 victory in the
season opening scrimmage for both teams.
After four unanswered scores from the Tigers in the first quarter,
Colorado was finally able to crack the CC defense 19 seconds into the
second quarter with a goal that would make it 4-1. Colorado College
then responded with three more goals before the Buffs would put one
more in to make the score at half 7-2.
Any sense of momentum that CU’s late first half goal might have gained
them was quickly stolen by CC when they tallied two scores two and a
half minutes into the second half, and the Buffs would not be able
fight back from the huge deficits they faced all day, the largest being
14-3 at the 8:34 mark in the third quarter.
If there was anything good to take from the game for CU, it is that the
game was a scrimmage, not a regular season game. As the turnovers piled
up and as CC took ground ball after ground ball, it became clear that
CU will have to put in extra effort to correct the sloppy play that
plagued them against the Tigers as they prepare for the February 28th
season opener against 14th ranked Boston College in Boulder.
Colorado will face the Colorado School of Mines at 6 PM, Wednesday, February 11th at Kittredge Field in their second of three preseason scrimmages.
