Colorado Releases Fall '08 RosterWritten by: David LeachBoulder, CO (Sept. 12, 2008) - The University of Colorado Men's Lacrosse team concluded their Fall, 2008 tryouts on Thursday, inviting 30 new players to join the 24 returning.
With a roster of 54, the Buffs will begin Fall training on Monday – including a weight lifting schedule, strength and conditioning sessions, and field training; along with Yoga exercises and a nearly 13-mile hike in the heart of the Rocky Mountain National Forest.
"I've been hiking once before, and it was a good time", said Nick Kupcewicz, Atlanta native and 2008 CU-Recruit. "But I expect it to be a little different than back home." Next weekend coaches and captains will lead the Buffs to Lawn Lake Trail, a 12.9 mile round-trip hike, with a summit over 11,000 feet. "It could quite possibly be the most beautiful place in the world." CU alum, and second-year assistant coach, Patrick Janson told the team.
The Fall roster includes several transfers, including defenseman Marty Taffet from St. John's University (NCAA DI – Queens, NY). "I'm really looking forward to this year. It looks like it's not going to be all that different from my past experience."
Patrick Wilhemly, a walk-on from De La Salle High School in Concord, California returns to the field after spending a year in South and Central America. He joins former teammate Nico Enea, another first-year Buff. "It feels good to be in Boulder and back on the field. Kind of funny that there's a couple guys on the team that are familiar to me." Wilhelmy, with his beard of eight months, brings a "little touch of Boulder" to a team that is tense with anticipation.
After a 3-hour-long introduction meeting, the new team was bombarded with requirements, scheduled events, and expectations. All of which is aimed at one thing, improvement.
Second-year team captain Alex Mical recognizes the hard work it takes to get anywhere in this league. "Absolutely nothing is going to be given to us in the MCLA. Any team, no matter how talented, needs to put in unprecedented amounts of work on and off the field if they are going to see success."
Patrick Chapla, a junior transfer from Goucher College (NCAA DIII – Towson, MD), has been anxious to get started. "I'm so excited to get out there and start working hard with these guys." He comes to CU with a wealth of talent on the offensive side of the ball and is expected to be an integral part of the Buffs future success. With a very hectic two-week-tryout behind them, the Fall '08 Buffs will start up again Monday. With a strictly regimented workout program designed to make them stronger, more agile, and faster than ever before. "Success doesn't come easy", said Head Coach John Galvin, who enters his 6th season at the helm in Boulder. "We're going to ensure that we're prepared for a winning season. These guys want to work harder than any of their opponents."
October 3rd, the Buffs will face-off against the CSU Rams, in Boulder, to kick off a series of events for the Alumni of the University of Colorado. The game will begin at 7:00pm, under the lights, at Kittredge Field.
