Buffs Take on Colorado Mines in Redeeming Second Scrimmage
By: Cortney Kesselman, Public Relations, CU Lacrosse

Boulder, CO (Feb. 11, 2009) - The University of Colorado Men’s Lacrosse team hosted the Colorado School of Mines in their second of three pre-season scrimmages.  Walking onto Kittredge field, the Buffs knew what had to be done, especially after Saturday’s blunder against CC.  Two hours and nine goals later, the Buffaloes left the field after a satisfying landslide victory.

Colorado played a strong game from start to finish. Gaining control immediately, CU maintained their edge throughout the first quarter with good passing.  Offensively, the Buffs wasted no shot opportunities, scoring the game’s first goal, as well as the following eight, unanswered.  Their defense proved impenetrable as Mines struggled to take just one shot.

Leading 1-0 going into the second quarter, the Buffaloes took the lead and never looked back.  They easily netted three more shots in the second quarter bringing the score to 4-0.  CU kept tight control of the field and by the end of the first half, Mines seemed to be playing a losing game of keep-away.

It took CU five more scores in the second half to get the attention of the visiting Orediggers.  One of the biggest highlights of the game happened when Ben Weisz locked in goal number 8 for the Buffs, followed less than 10 seconds later with another well-placed shot for the Colorado by Joel Packer off a fantastic face-off by long-pole Martin Taffet.  With less than three minutes left in the game, Mines managed to muster two face-saving goals.  When the game clock hit zero and the buzzer sounded, the final score of 9-2 made CU the clear winners.

If the Buffs continue to play the kind of game they played tonight, their scheduled opponents have reason to feel concerned.  In the meantime, the team will continue to prepare for the upcoming season, which opens on February 28th when CU hosts Boston College.

The Buffs will have one last pre-season scrimmage against the University of Northern Colorado hosted by CU this Saturday, February 14, at 1pm on Kittredge Field.
