Despite Criticism, as #1 Seed, Buffs Win Round 1By: Cortney Kesselman, Public Relations, CU Lacrosse
May 1, 2009 (Boulder, CO) - Colorado played their first game of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference’s Division I championship tonight on Kittredge Field against The University of Utah. Despite having beaten out their conference competitors to earn the top seed for playoffs, CU’s success has attracted skepticism from some. CU scraped by with a 2 point win when the two teams faced-off earlier this season. This time around, though, the Buffs held nothing back pulling off a 9 point win at 13-4 and earning their place in the final round.
The Buffs took control at the first face off and kept the first quarter almost entirely in front of the Utes’ goal. A minute into the game Mike Emerson (Park City/ Park City, UT) scored first for Colorado. By the quarter’s end, they scored twice more, including one from Nick Kupcewicz (Harrison/ Kennesaw, GA) that bounced off the goalie and into the goal.
Down 3-0 at the start of the second, Utah turned up the heat as they netted their first goal less than a minute in. The Buffs relied more heavily on the defensive efforts of Alex Mical, Ryan Burt, and Mike Geocaris during the second quarter which, combined with the quick reflexes of goalie Kevin Moriarty (Seton Hall Prep/ Chatham, NJ), turned out to be a pretty deadly combination for Utah who had no success getting past them for the rest of the quarter. On the other hand Colorado managed to pull off an additional four points, two of which came courtesy of Joel Packer (The Stevenson School/ Monterey, CA) in the last two minutes of the half, bringing their halftime score to 7-1. Colorado played a strong second half, ensuring the safeguard of their lead. During the third quarter, after giving the Utes two goals back to back, the home team responded with two of their own only fourteen seconds apart—the first from Tyler Snyder ( Arapahoe/Centenniel, CO) and the second from Colin Rosenblum (The Hun School/Princeton,NJ). The Buffs earned a victory over the Utes with a final score of 13-4. The Buffaloes will advance to the conference finals tomorrow against BYU.
Goals scored for Colorado by: Colin Rosenblum (4), Joel Packer (3), Tyler Snyder (2), Josh Albrecht (1), Thomas Appel (1), Mike Emerson (1), and Nick Kupcewicz (1).
