CU Drops Heart-Breaker to BYU in RMLC Finals
By Scott Cunningham; CU Lacrosse Public Relations

Boulder, CO (5/2/09) - The battle for the RMLC crown looked like a heavyweight fight on Saturday on soggy Kittredge Field. The 2nd ranked (collegelax.us) Brigham Young University Cougars (16-3, 6-1 conf.) used a goal with 90 seconds left in regulation to overtake the surging #6 Buffs (13-6, 6-1 conf) 11-10 in an exciting back-and-forth battle.

After leading 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, the Cougars built up a 7-6 lead at halftime. The Buffaloes tied it at seven, midway through the third quarter, only to find themselves down 10-8 with nine minutes to play in the game.
Playing with a visible sense of urgency, CU was able to tie it up with just over four minutes to play. For a moment it looked as if AJ Blackburn (Hun School/ Princeton, NJ) would give Colorado the lead, but his wrap around attempt deflected off of the inside of the post with three minutes left in the quarter.

BYU would score the eventual game winner on a man-up possession after an illegal body check was called against the Buffs in front of the CU bench. The win marked the third straight RMLC Tournament victory for Brigham Young, while Colorado has not won the trophy since 1994.

Despite the loss, the Buffaloes were awarded an at-large bid to the National Tournament in Denver. The Buffs hold the 5th seed in the 16-team tournament, and will play the University of California-Santa Barbara at 7pm, May 12, at Dicks Sporting Goods Park.
