With the University of Colorado Buffaloes (11-2, 3-0 RMLC) back in Boulder, it was time to focus on playing conference opponents as the season wound down. The first team to come challenge the Buffaloes on home turf was the Westminster College Griffins (8-4, 1-3 RMLC). With spring now in full swing, temperatures soared to a balmy 75 degrees for the evening face-off.

The Buffaloes came out strong putting the first two goals on the scoreboard before the Griffins answered with one of their own. The Buffaloes, intent on keeping a two goal cushion, scored again at the hands of junior midfielder Riley Kulm. The teams both put another goal in and brought the score to four to two with just under five minutes left in the first quarter. Senior attackman Riley Seidel put his name in the goal column for the first time this game and started a three goal run for the Buffaloes.

The game entered the second quarter with the Buffaloes leading six to two, but also down a man from a late first quarter penalty. The Griffins were able to capitalize on the man up advantage early in the second quarter and started a four goal run of their own, tying the Buffaloes at six. The Buffaloes were able to restart their offense and retake a one goal lead after a goal from senior attackman Jack Cranston. The twelfth ranked Griffins were not intimidated though, tying the Buffaloes at seven and showing some strong resiliency against the second ranked Buffaloes. The game entered half time tied at seven in what was shaping up to be another close battle on Kittredge Field.

The Buffaloes came back out in the second half and attacked the net, regaining their lead after a goal from senior midfielder Greg Kelsic. Kelsic’s goal was followed immediately by Seidel’s second of the game, which gave the Buffaloes back their two goal cushion. The Griffins answered both goals, stopping the Buffaloes two goal run, tying the game at nine and sending it in to the fourth quarter.

The Buffaloes were the first to strike in the fourth quarter taking a one goal lead.  If the game’s trend was any indication the Buffaloes would need to put more shots in the net to secure the victory. Cranston did just that with a deep shot finding the netting with just over 1:30 left in the game. The Buffaloes added another goal to cement the win with 1:01 left in regulation. Securing one of the toughest wins of the season for the Buffaloes this season, the final score was twelve to nine.

Next on the schedule for the Buffaloes were the Utah Utes (4-10, 0-3 RMLC) at Folsom Field in Boulder on the following evening. In the yearly tradition of playing inside Folsom Field, the Buffaloes suited up to take on a Utah squad just after the Colorado Football team’s spring game.  The Buffaloes and Utes began play one a cooler evening with clouds covering the sky.

Both Utah and Colorado came out very fast scoring early and often in the game. The Buffaloes scored first but were answered less than a minute later by Utah. Colorado was able to open up a small lead after scoring two more goals in succession.  Utah put an end to this streak and secured another goal bringing the early score to three to two until Seidel put a ball in the back of the net. Utah answered again and the teams both scored a couple more until the Buffaloes went on a four goal run. Utah ended the streak though on a man-up goal that brought the score to nine to five. On a fast break to end the quarter, the Buffaloes added one more taking a five goal lead in to the end of the first quarter; ten to five.

Utah, poised on not letting the game slip away, scored two quick goals to start the second quarter. Colorado answered both goals and looked to keep increasing on their lead when Utah found the back of the net three more times.  The Utes entered halftime with almost all of the momentum and only trailing by two with a score of twelve to ten.

Both teams scored one fast goal each coming out of halftime, until Colorado took command of the game and scored six more goals to Utah’s one. The teams entered the fourth quarter with the game all but decided it appeared as Colorado lead Utah twenty to twelve. The Buffaloes would add six more goals and Utah would add two before the final whistle blew.

The Buffaloes can now turn all of their attention towards the game many have had circled on their calendars since fall ball: the in-state showdown against Colorado State University (10-3, 2-1 RMLC). The Colorado Buffaloes will square off against the defending national champions on April 19th at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, with face-off at 6 PM MDT.
